Chance to impress for rising British stars at GB Pro Series

The LTA summer hard court season gets underway on Monday 29th July as part of the GB Pro-Series, providing another opportunity for rising British stars to compete on home soil.

This ITF World Tennis Tour women’s $25k event, held at the Foxhills Club & Resort in Surrey, has some impressive previous winner’s including current British number 1 Joanna Konta, and current French Open doubles champion Timea Babos.

The entry list at Foxhills includes three women ranked inside the world top 200, including reigning champion Tereza Smitkova of the Czech Republic.  Ankita Raina (India) and Lesley Kerkhove (Netherlands) will also feature, the latter having beaten Wimbledon 2013 runner-up Sabine Lisicki in qualifying to reach this year’s main draw at SW19.

The British challenge is led by Naiktha Bains, Gabi Taylor, Samantha Murray, and Emily Appleton. Leeds-born Bains made her Wimbledon debut this year in doubles and also played singles qualifying alongside Hampshire’s Taylor and Manchester’s Murray – the latter reaching the final round off the back of an excellent run to the Manchester Trophy semi-finals.

The tournament will be extra special for Surrey’s Appleton.  The 20-year-old, who was born in nearby Chertsey, said: “It’s always such a nice opportunity to get to play a high level tournament that’s just around the corner from where I live. I spend most of the year travelling to different places each week and so to be able to play at a tournament with all the comforts of being at home is really special. Also, with Foxhills being such a great venue it makes playing there really easy and fun. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Richard Joyner, LTA Tournament Director, commented: “It is always such a pleasure to return to Foxhills. The Club are always so pro-active in their support of the event, which together with the fantastic facilities makes it such a great week for the player’s and everyone involved.  This year’s event sees another strong player line up, with some excellent tennis promised throughout the week.”

The Foxhills event is part of an expanded international calendar of tournaments being staged by the LTA in Britain this year, providing a showcase for tennis outside of the traditional summer grass court season and opening up the sport to more fans around the country. The move is also part of the LTA’s new long-term Performance Strategy, and aims to provide more opportunities for British players to compete, earn ranking points and win prize money in the UK.

Qualifying for Foxhills is scheduled for Monday 29 July, with main draw starting on Tuesday 30 July.

Entry for spectators during the week is free of charge, whilst for ticketing information for Finals Day on Saturday 3 August contact  or call 01932 704451
