Tagmarshal Update: What the stats show us

Expectations

Our goal time is based on fourball play is 4 hours, 34 minutes (including 10 minutes at halfway hut). We expect member golf fourball play at 4 hours, 10 minutes.
We expect competition threeball to play at 3 hours, 50 minutes (including 15 minutes at halfway hut).
We don't include twoball and oneball stats as their figures would be distorted.

We have four categories of golfers:

  • On pace (you’re our friends)
  • Delayed – being held up by other groups (not your fault)
  • Delayer – behind time and affecting others experience
  • Slow - behind time, but no effect on other groups (often playing in off-peak times)

August & September figures

  • Average Bernard Hunt round time: 3 hours, 54 minutes
    Longcross: 4 hours, 14 minutes
  • 93% players ahead of time
  • 1.5 delayed groups per day to goal time. Usually the groups directly behind the delayers.
  • One slow group will on average effect six groups behind.
  • Longest hole vs allotted time (14th hole Longcross +4mins) , (7th hole BH +6mins). Contributor of this slow time from both holes is tee shot to fairway.
  • Time spent at HWH average is 9 mins. Average includes those that don’t stop so we are looking into getting a more accurate assessment on this.

Moving forward

Our starter team will tailor their welcome to visitors and guests to include instruction on slow holes above.

Director of Golf, Sean Graham, and Courses and Estate Manager, Derrick, will look at fairway to be widened on the left-hand side of Bernard Hunt's seventh hole. A sign will be created and installed at the 14th tee on the Longcross Course to encourage hitting provisional balls from restricted view to speed up play from tee.

We have member data on delayers. Golf operations will speak to these players and determine reason for delay and analyse data. Further tracking will be in place throughout the winter months to examine changes to hole speeds based on wet weather.
